TSIYINU M.A BASIC SCHOOL CONDUCTED HER JICA ENDLINE ASSESSMENT

Mathematics seems to be a relatively difficult subject for most students in most countries in Africa. This is partly due to the methodology employed in teaching and learning mathematics at the basic level of the educational structure of these countries.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in collaboration with Ghana Education Service conducted research and subsequently enrolled in a program to assist some selected schools to overcome the seeming mathematics phobia syndrome.

Tsiyinu M.A Basic School, one of the beneficiary schools, embraced the program. Workshops were attended, SMC was restructured, a baseline assessment was conducted, remedial lessons were also undertaken, and finally end line assessment was conducted.

Though the school was not able to fully achieve the expected sixty (60) hours of remedial lessons, the materials such as the pupils’ workbooks, the exercise books, and the backup books provided for the pupils facilitated the consistent and smooth running of the program. The table below shows the progress of the work:

The program is good. Pupils enjoyed it. The desire to progress from one level to the other by pupils is high and it is promoting academically healthy competition.

Tsiyinu M.A basic school is grateful to JICA and Ghana Education Service. More intensive training for facilitators and support for the school is required for a better result.
