Tsiyinu M.A Basic school observed the 2022 International Menstrual Hygiene Day.
Menstruation is still considered in some parts of the world as a taboo although it is a natural phenomenon. May 28 is declared World
Menstrual Hygiene Day. It has become necessary to create awareness to educate the young ones that fall within the menstrual period to take good care of themselves and also parents, guardians, and other adults to support these girls to live hygienic lifestyles.
Many girls especially school-going ones do not have sanitary pads, a place to change during flow, good toilets, and so on. Research shows that most of them are absent from school during these periods of menstruation. Awareness creation and support for these girls will be a feather in our cups. As a result, Tsiyinu M.A Basic school also observed international menstrual hygiene Day as part of Ketu- North Municipal Education Directorate program to create awareness of menstrual hygiene.
This year's International Menstrual Hygiene Day though it falls on 28th May 2022 which is Saturday, the Girl Child Education unit of Ketu- North Municipal has directed all schools in the municipality to observe the day on the 26th and 27th of May,2022 since schools will not be in session on Saturday.
In line with this directive, Tsiyinu M.A Basic school has also observed this by inviting some nurses from the community CHPS Compound to give a talk on menstrual hygiene. The nurses advise the students to take care of themselves when they are in their menstrual period.
Some of the students who answered the questions asked were presented with sanitary pads after the talk. Another clear evidence is that the "enough sanitary pads brought were not enough" hence the need for support. The School-Based Facilitator, Mr. John Amuzu appeals to any benevolent persons or institutions to support in providing sanitary pads and soaps to less privileged students of the school.
